OUR PROPOSED HIGH SCHOOL
A vision in the making
Since the early days of Helena River Steiner School (when we started our journey as Guildford Steiner Playgroup), a Waldorf High School has been part of the school community’s vision. We are filled with excitement as this vision transforms to reality.
When we embarked on this journey of bringing Steiner education to Perth’s north east metropolitan suburbs, we identified a gap in the educational offering. We could easily and sustainably deliver a primary school education that could commence in Playgroup and run through to Year 6.
However, after this time, our students would need to leave their community. They would need to either further their education at the Perth Waldorf School in Perth’s southern suburbs or enter mainstream education locally. This was when the school community started to dream a future where the two could be combined in the heart of Midland.
Time is of the essence. Our first Helena River Steiner School students will be graduating Year 6 at the end of 2020and are seeking High School placements. However, this high school is not just for students who have had a Steiner primary education, but for all families who are wanting a more unique community experience for their child’s secondary education. Students can often get lost in huge high schools. We offer a very relationship-based approach with a healthy balance of academic, artistic, social and physical learning, producing strong, confident and purposeful adults who are ready to contribute to the world.
Apart from being located within walking distance of a major public transport hub, the area is also one of the State Government’s “Strategic Centres” meaning there is an increasing amount of investment into local community infrastructure, amenity and education. There is a strong economic argument for this conveniently located, growing area.
Beyond this, for 40,000 years, Midland has been a sacred place for the Noongar Wadjuk. Located at the confluence of the two major river systems (the Swan and Helena Rivers) the land was always a meeting place for different peoples and provided an abundance of natural resources. There is a rich Aboriginal history in this area and we acknowledge and respect these customs.
Currently, we are seeking Expressions of Interest for families wishing to join our proposed Year 7 class in 2021. Planning is well underway regarding the school’s location, amenities and curriculum. We are looking forward to sharing more plans soon. To register your interest please click here.
