Here at Helena River Steiner School we are passionate about our planet, environmental sustainability and reducing our footprint on the earth. That is why we were excited to welcome the wonderful Lisa from Cleanaway last week for our first school incursion of Term 2. Lisa engaged with our school’s student community to discuss all things waste and recycling in Perth.
Lisa engaged with our children by tapping into their natural curiosity, encouraging them to participate in waste and recycling efforts, both at home and at school. Throughout the sessions, Lisa taught the children how to make the right choices in not only dealing with waste, but also preventing it in the first place!
Our students proved to be very willing participants. As Lisa shared her knowledge around the ‘Reuse Recycle Reduce’ philosophy of waste management our students, with their curious and inquisitive minds, were full of questions. In fact, it was commented on that the Helena River Steiner School students asked very insightful and intelligent questions regarding this important subject matter.
Following on from such informative sessions, we are sure that children went home with tales of landfill perils and recycling sorting machine hiccups. The Helena River Steiner School children are now well equipped to identify what belongs in which bins in their own homes. We are also sure that they are enjoying putting their learning into practice.
We are proud to say that the school’s Food and Nutrition Policy echos the ‘Reuse Recycle Reduce’ philosophy by requesting that no disposable-packaging foods are included in children’s lunch boxes. This way we can keep little bodies well-nourished and ensure that we’re protecting the environment.
